Things You Didn’t Know About Folliculitis On Butt

Butt pimples are embarrassing and uncomfortable; contrary to popular belief, they are not acne. “True acne on the buttock is rare,” says Joshua Zeichner, MD, chief of cosmetic and clinical studies in the department of dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.

In agreement is Jamie MacKelfresh, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and associate professor of dermatology at Atlanta’s Emory University School of Medicine. Dr MacKelfresh explains that acne on the buttocks differs from acne on the face, chest, or back.

Acne is characterized by blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples on the face, neck, shoulders, upper arms, and upper back/chest. Dr Zeichner explains that excess oil in the follicles feeds an overpopulation of acne-causing bacteria, which in turn causes inflammation. He says that acne is more likely to appear on the chest, back, and upper arms because of the abundance of oil glands in those areas.

However, there are perhaps other explanations for bum bumps. Market researchers at NPD have seen an increase in the prevalence of cases of so-called “acne” of the butts due to the increasing popularity of tight, clingy apparel. Dermatologists are concerned that the tightness of athleisure gear worn during and after exercise may exacerbate these skin issues.

What causes these irritating lumps and what you can do about them will be discussed below.

Types of Buttne You May Not Know About

An eruption of pimples on the buttocks, also known as “button,” can be triggered by several issues. Detailed explanations and visuals are provided below.

Carbuncles

Carbuncles, which are collections of boils, have been described as “a stinging cluster of pus beneath the skin,” resembling an acne cyst. According to the University of Rochester Medical Center, they manifest themselves when folliculitis progresses into a more severe infection.

So, having acne does not increase your likelihood of developing folliculitis or carbuncles.

Despite their superficial similarities, the American Academy of Dermatology recognizes acne and folliculitis (carbuncles) as two distinct skin diseases. It is not true that those who suffer from severe acne on their face and body are more likely to develop folliculitis or carbuncles in that area. The University of Rochester emphasizes that scarring can result from improper treatment of both carbuncles and folliculitis.

Folliculitis

MacKelfresh explains that folliculitis, which leads to acne-like lumps on the buttocks, is the culprit. She explains that bacterial, yeast, or fungal infections, inflammation of the hair follicles, or follicular obstruction are all potential triggers for folliculitis. According to the Mayo Clinic, Staphylococcus aureus (staph) bacteria often found on human skin are to blame.

According to the Mayo Clinic, folliculitis manifests as small, tender pimples that appear scaly.

“I most commonly see a condition called folliculitis,” says Zeichner. He explains that buttock folliculitis is caused by friction from clothing and sweat, which break down the skin’s protective barrier.

Keratosis Pilaris

The good news is that these little bumps (which resemble goose skin) on the buttocks don’t cause pain or itch and are often safe, as confirmed by the Mayo Clinic. According to the Mayo Clinic, they develop when the protein keratin, which shields the skin, clogs the follicle. The cause of keratosis pilaris is unknown, but it often develops in tandem with other skin disorders or hereditary diseases. According to the Mayo Clinic, keratosis pilaris is a common cause of pimples on the outer arms and legs.

Contact Dermatitis

Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center doctors have found that the chemical preservative MI (methylisothiazolinone) contained in wet flushable wipes may be the source of pimples on the buttocks in some people. According to a study published in JAMA Dermatology, these wipes can trigger allergic contact dermatitis in certain users.

How to Get Rid of Buttne

Whether you’re being treated for folliculitis, carbuncles, keratosis pilaris, or an allergy will determine the specifics of your care.

You can expect the following.

Folliculitis

Folliculitis breakouts clear up on their own most of the time. If not, a dermatologist might recommend a treatment regimen to help your skin clean up. MacKelfresh states “butt acne” is treatable with a topical antibiotic cream or antibacterial wash with benzoyl peroxide. You may need to take an oral antifungal or antibiotic on rare occasions.

Zeichner recommends using cleansers containing benzoyl peroxide, a chemical shown to minimize acne-causing bacteria and irritation, at a concentration of 10 per cent or higher. The active component needs time to do its job, so let the cleanser lather on the face while you sing the alphabet before washing.

Carbuncles

Carbuncles require more rigorous treatment due to their depth. To combat the illness, your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic (either orally or topically). To drain the pus from the boil, your doctor may need to use a lancet to penetrate it in a sterile environment. A bandage will then be applied to the affected area. A carbuncle should never be drained at home.

Keratosis Pilaris

The Mayo Clinic says that because the ailment causes no pain, it is generally dismissed as merely a variant of normal skin and, therefore, cannot be prevented; however, moisturizing may help alleviate dry spots.

Allergy

For the next month, refrain from using any wet wipes. Doctors at Ohio State University warn that abstaining for merely a week or two may not result in clearer skin.

Why Your Butts Might Be Breaking Out in “Pimples” and What You Can Do About It

Whenever feasible, dress in loose-fitting garments. Skin irritation and folliculitis can be caused by wearing tight clothing, especially when accompanied by sweat. After working out, it’s important to shower and change into clean clothes. The Mayo Clinic also recommends drying off with a clean towel or washcloth after every shower.

Get any long-term health problems, including diabetes, under control by working with your doctor. Your body may have difficulty fending against infections if you have a chronic health condition.

Carbuncles and the need for more intensive therapy can be avoided if folliculitis is controlled immediately.

Wet flushable wipes, especially ones containing MI, should be avoided.
